If you’ve ever stood in the middle of a messy kitchen and thought, “I don’t even like being here anymore,” you’re not alone.
When you’re juggling motherhood, mental load, and daily stress, your home can start to feel like another source of overwhelm — rather than the refuge it was meant to be.

But there’s a powerful, healing shift that doesn’t require a single purchase or Pinterest-perfect space.
It’s called appreciation — and it’s how you reclaim the energy of your home from a place of love, not guilt.

Appreciation vs. Perfection
We’re taught that loving our home means improving it — painting the cabinets, decluttering the closets, redecorating with seasonal accents.
But before any of that, there’s something far more foundational: loving your home as it is.
I found myself wrapped up in the toxic energy of perfectionism recently, and it threw me for a bit of a loop as it hit quite unexpectedly.
We are coming up on the 1 year anniversary of a big renovation we did on our home’s heart – the kitchen. And I went from utterly hating my dysfunctional kitchen to GLOWING with love and pride for what we transformed it into.
But now that the dust has settled and real-life resumed for a year, it is indeed reflective of a lived-in kitchen, complete with a pile of mail in one corner, a thriving Basil plant alongside a near-dead green onion clipping, crumbs on the cutting board and drips of god-knows-what on the trash cabinet handle. Its messy, well used, and I am utterly still in love with it.
A short visit to neighbor’s home the other day, however, skewed my perception almost immediately. Her home is immaculate, smells amazing, and not a single article of anything out of place. After scraping my jaw off the floor in envy of her tidy and gorgeous home, I immediately listed in my head 100 reasons why mine is not as nice and never will be. And soon, I was feeling down, overwhelmed with the (normal!) clutter, and defeated.
Upon returning to my home, I immediately saw the hot wheels set and 13 cars scattered on the floor of the living room as a threat. I cringed to see I could not see my gleaming new quartz counter in the lounge, as it was covered in clutter and some sticky spots from drink-mixing on Saturday night. I sagged into my normal seat at the dining table, littered with board game boxes, half-built legos, and noticed my throw blanket on the floor, with a new hole in it thanks to our Aussie pup. And I thought – geez what a failure of a mom I am, my house is a disgrace, I’ll never measure up to that perfect mom next door.
And THAT’s the toxic trap.
The sticky spots on the counter. The worn-out throw blanket. The toys scattered across the floor. These are all signs of a lived-in, loved-on life.
When you shift your focus from what’s missing to what’s present, something changes — not just in your home, but in your spirit.
This is where healing begins.

Appreciation Creates Abundance
In the financial world, appreciation means your investment is growing. In the spiritual world, appreciation means your awareness and joy are growing — often in places you once overlooked.
Esther Hicks once said,
“Appreciation is the magic formula you’ve been seeking.”
And she’s right. When you stop resenting your home for the mess or the imperfections, and start feeling gratitude for your home — the walls breathe a little easier.
So do you.
Even in seasons of overwhelm, clutter, or exhaustion — appreciating what you have at home is a powerful emotional reset. You don’t have to wait until everything is “done” to feel better. You just need to notice what’s already good.
Ironically, this simple act of appreciation often leads to transformation — not just in your environment, but in your energy.
Loving your home again doesn’t start with a remodel — it starts with a mindset.

In my case, I had to take a deep breath, brew some of my favorite tea, and get to work re-wiring my brain.
I re-walked my home and gave thanks for all that is and focused on the memories made. Realizing the clutter, the mess, the stickiness of it all was love in escrow of the wonderful weekend we’d had.
The hot wheels on the floor? 2 hours of unbridled joy and bonding between my son and his little cousin, getting to know each other through play.
The sticky, messy counter and dining table? Evidence of a FUN night of trying new cocktails and board games between the adult cousins reconnecting after being apart.
The throw blanket on the ground – remembering at one point my daughter wanted to join the fun with the adults and wrapped herself in a blanket and sat with us, observing and learning.
And so came the powerful reminder, that no, the mess is not evidence of failure, its proof we are alive and have SO MUCH love and abundance to appreciate, if we can open our eyes to actually see what’s there.

A Simple Home Appreciation Practice
Try this gentle ritual once a day — or even once a week — to help shift your relationship with your home:
🌞 Morning Gratitude Walk
As you move through your home in the morning:
- Thank your bed for holding you.
- Thank your kitchen for feeding your family.
- Thank the bathroom for offering privacy and peace.
- Thank the walls for keeping you safe.
It may sound simple, but this energy shift is powerful.
When your home feels seen, it responds. So do you.

Let Go of “Not Enough”
This isn’t about ignoring the mess, or pretending everything’s perfect.
It’s about learning how to feel good in your home, even when life is messy.
This is for the moms who feel like their house is never clean enough.
Who scroll social media and wonder why their home doesn’t look like that.
Who feel guilty for resenting the space they worked so hard for.
Let that go. Replace it with gratitude. Let your appreciation be the anchor that grounds you.

Your Home is Listening
Homes, like people, respond to how they’re treated.
So start treating your space like an ally, not an enemy. Speak life into it. Thank it. Tend to it with love — not just for what it could be, but for what it already is.
Because the more you appreciate your home, the more it appreciates in return.
Not just in value — but in warmth, in comfort, in soul.
